Recently, the world's third-largest container shipping company, CMA CGM Group, filed a lawsuit in the Southern District of Texas, Houston area court in the United States against the American fuel company, GCC Supply & Trading, accusing them of supplying contaminated marine fuel to 13 vessels and seeking compensation in the millions of dollars. According to the lawsuit filed on March 20, 2025, CMA CGM alleges that GCC Supply & Trading provided 33,628 metric tons of Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) to 13 vessels between March and June 2023, resulting in severe operational issues.

The lawsuit documents point out that shortly after using this fuel, the vessels experienced problems such as fuel pump seizures, ICU leaks, engine failures, and even instances where vessels lost power due to fuel-related issues. CMA CGM's lawyers explicitly stated that these issues were not due to incorrect fuel orders but rather because the quality of fuel provided by GCC did not meet the standards.

CMA CGM believes that GCC not only breached their contractual obligations but also failed to conduct necessary testing and quality control before delivering the fuel, leading to fuel contamination. However, GCC did not provide any warnings to CMA CGM about known defects in their products.

CMA CGM is seeking a court ruling for GCC to compensate for losses exceeding $5 million, with the specific amount to be determined by the court. Currently, GCC has not responded to this lawsuit.
