On April 11th, the White House confirmed that President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday morning (April 10th) to raise the total tariff rate on Chinese goods to 145%. A White House official confirmed to CNBC that the tariff rate on imported Chinese goods has now reached 145%. The latest executive order signed by Trump will increase the tariff rate in Beijing from 84% to 125%, in addition to the previously imposed 20% tariffs on fentanyl-related products from China, bringing the total tariff rate to 145%.
At the same time, additional tariffs are being imposed on "small parcel packages," marking the third adjustment within 8 days.
The executive order, titled "Modification of Harmonized Tariff Schedule," indicates that the U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule has been revised to raise the reciprocal tariff rate to 125%.
Furthermore, the additional 20% tariffs imposed on Chinese goods, due to fentanyl and undocumented immigrant issues, will continue to be enforced. This means that goods exported from China to the U.S. are currently facing a total tariff rate of at least 145%.
According to Zhongjin, Trump's tariff measures have already triggered supply chain disruptions and economic profit impacts. An increasing number of American business owners are expressing concerns, believing that Trump's tariff policies cannot achieve the goal of reshoring manufacturing to the U.S. They point out that building a competitive supply chain for mass consumer market products takes decades, not just a few years. Tariffs cannot solve America's economic issues.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian chaired the routine press conference on April 10th.
Regarding the U.S. announcement of imposing additional tariffs on China, Lin Jian stated that the U.S. uses tariffs as a weapon of pressure and self-interest, seriously infringing on the rights of various countries, violating World Trade Organization rules, damaging the multilateral trading system, and disrupting the global economic order. This approach is a blatant provocation and goes against the global trend.
Lin Jian emphasized that there are no winners in tariff wars and trade wars. China is not willing to engage, but is not afraid to do so. China will not be deprived of its legitimate rights and will not stand by while international rules are violated. If the U.S. persists in a tariff war, China will resolutely respond. U.S. unilateralism will face stronger opposition from the international community.
