By 2030, the world's sixth largest liner company, Ocean Network Express (ONE), plans to invest around $25 billion to increase capacity by 30% through new shipbuilding and acquisitions and to advance port construction.
According to Alphaliner's data as of March 6, ONE owns 257 vessels with a total capacity of 1.9777 million TEU, ranking it sixth globally. ONE plans to build 42 new container ships between 2025 and 2028 and is also open to acquiring other shipping companies.
According to the World Trade Organization, global trade volume increased by 2.7% year-on-year in 2024 and is expected to grow by 3.0% in 2025. Regions like India and Southeast Asia have attracted production bases for smartphones and electronic components, leading to a continuous expansion of export industries. ONE believes that as the global southern regions develop, global trade will continue to expand in the medium to long term.
In addition to ONE, other major shipping companies are also pursuing shipbuilding plans. Maersk may adjust its strategy again, abandoning the previous goal of maintaining fleet capacity between 4 to 4.4 million TEU and planning to order up to 40 new ships. CMA CGM currently has 82 ordered vessels with an ordered capacity exceeding 1.3 million TEU and may have recently ordered 12 LNG dual-fuel 18,000 TEU container ships.
